A country is not only thousands of square kilometers and millions of citizens. A state can be big or very small, like Monaco. With an area of just over two square kilometers, this doesn’t bother the residents at all, but on the contrary, the state attracts tourists with its bountiful entertainment. The Monaco Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo casino are the main sources of wealth and prosperity of the country, which help it develop no worse than other, larger states. Will a super new microstate be able to achieve the same success and prosperity? And what if this is a state on blockchain, considering that the territorial issues have already been practically resolved? A new country has literally sprouted under the nose of Europe. DeCenter figured out whether a 21st century Libertalia could become a reality.

It Was Yours, It Became Ours

Recently, a microscopic territory was found on the western bank of the Danube, between two once hostile states, which, as it turned out, does not adjoin any of the surrounding states. We are talking about the republics of the former Yugoslavia. The history of the origin of the no man’s land is carefully kept silent. But if we think carefully and remember that in the ’90s of the last century, this area was divided into small republics not by the day, but by the hour, the question of historical details will disperse by itself. Simply put, the cadastral engineers were in such a hurry to divide the territory between Serbia and Croatia that they “overlooked” almost a thousand hectares of land.

In 2015, a shrewd Czech activist was inspired with the idea of liberation from the influence of the state and the creation of an ideal equal society, where every citizen would be able to freely assert their rights. Being an ardent liberal, he did everything to make the impossible possible. A country full of freedom and, most importantly, decentralization. In general, a utopian state on the blockchain is just around the corner.

But the Land Is Not Made of Rubber…

The new country bears the name “Liberland”: liber is free, land is a country. And, if “liber” is already fully justified, then with “land” everything is not that simple. But first things first.

Vit Jedlicka, now the president of the country Liberland, is the very activist who saw this site, as well as its territorial independence. This Eastern European oasis is located on the neutral territory of the Gornja Siga; therefore the question of the “occupation” of the new land should have been settled without any problems. Nevertheless, there were difficulties in the development of this area in the way of the brave activist and his associates.

Despite the absence of the need for the land reference of such a country (decentralized), it still has to have a base camp. Literally on the day of the “discovery,” Vit decided to bite his teeth into this territory. Now, Liberland has only seven square kilometers of the globe, and this is catastrophically low if everyone who registered for citizenship in 2015 comes to live in the country. And that is more than 500,000 people. That is almost 80 people per square meter. What is to be done?

This is one of the priorities of the head of the new state. In addition to creating a distributed economy and decentralized independence, the “government” is inspired by the advanced blockchain technologies for organizing daily life in the country. For example, the construction of residential buildings in a limited area is a paramount condition for the creation of a new society. But in order to significantly expand the boundaries of such a small territory and squeeze the maximum useful area out of it, one has to go for architectural tricks. And here they did not do without the unique functions of the blockchain.

Vit Jedlicka is positive in the matter of resettlement and assures that there is enough space for everyone. “We will build skyscrapers,” he said, showing layouts for future buildings. We made some calculations: the tallest skyscraper in the world is located in Dubai. Its height is 828 meters, and that is 162 floors and a million square meters of usable space. The building itself occupies just over 300 square meters. This means that Liberland will contain at least 10 such skyscrapers and about 20 square meters of living space per person. This is pretty good.

An interesting note: a highrise building is a complete analogy of launching a sidechain on the Bitcoin blockchain. A powerful example of how dozens can be made from a single Bitcoin block without sacrificing volumes.

Liberland in Peace and Harmony

Despite the “neutrality” of the territory of Gornja Siga, the authorities of the neighboring countries have not yet set clear rules for themselves in relation to the newly made region. If the Serbian side is entirely loyal to such a movement, the Croats, on the contrary, perceive it belligerently and are very nervous. They plan to join the Schengen zone, so they must show how vigilantly they are able to protect and defend the borders of the country. And this is one of the factors that inhibited the cultivation of the new territory.

The main work on the “setting” of the new state takes place in the nearby territory, in Serbia. In the city of Backi Monostor, the first embassy of the country was opened in the Oasis of Peace hostel. By the way, several more recently appeared in Germany and France. The president has already approved state stamps, opened the “Made in Liberland” store, introduced the “Liberland Airways” airplane and the first state boat.

Despite the problematic relations with Croatia, Jedlicka believes that this state of affairs means the recognition of the country. Moreover, on January 31 of this year, the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, transparently noted that the issue of the division of land between Serbia and Croatia remains open and needs clarification. His speech inspired the participants of the meeting because the question of Bill Etheridge about the entry of the new territory into the European Union also remained open for further consideration.

Liberland in the Grasp of Bitcoin

Liberland won its popularity not only by freedom and independence. Increased interest began to appear after the community opened the registration of citizenship in 2015. But the most interesting thing began after the campaign to raise funds for infrastructure development and building failed miserably.

Then Jedlicka enlisted the support of many Bitcoin companies, including the Swiss Bitcoin Suisse AG. By the way, it is this organization that is actively involved in the development of Liberland. By law, cryptocurrency in Switzerland is not subject to VAT and therefore becomes an ideal tool for trade and economic management.

The close cooperation of the state with innovative processes should be an accelerator for the development of the country in many areas. Liberland immediately approved Bitcoin as the state currency, and the entire infrastructure of the country is planned to take into account the laws of decentralization. Ether and Bitcoin Cash are also for development and promotion. Roger Ver recently shared information that BCH is the main source of investment in the country. And, as the developers of the project say, the Liberians began to accept cryptocurrency from the very first day of its foundation. One of the diplomats of Liberland even reserved the Lightning payment channel in order to diversify the country’s financial system.

Of course, the team believes that the world has become a field for experiments with taxation and excessive regulation of human rights. The official website of the country encourages citizens to deal with these problems by relying on crypto technologies and DAO support, and follow the rule “live and let others live.” But it is not yet possible to say for sure whether the new government will cope with such a position and what kind of future the Liberians will have to live with.

Decentralized State: A Utopia or the Inevitable?

Creating a decentralized state sets the task of an organizational plan for people. First, one needs to develop an idea and share it with those whose principles, attitudes, and way of thinking will work on it and push the wheel of progress.

A decentralized state can exist not only within square meters but also on a global scale. Or space. That is, wherever there are supporters of a certain ideology. This is the basic principle. Existence regardless of territorial boundaries, outside the government cap and a set of laws. As an example, we can draw an analogy with mobile operators. Today, the network subscriber has the right to change the operator without changing the number. And in most locations, there is no longer any difference between the coverage of communication between several operators. All are connected to the same base stations.

Similarly, the states of the future will be realized if the world moves toward decentralization. Like the “Citizen Plus” rate? You are welcome. Not satisfied with subscription fees or conditions? Go to another state that offers a better package of services. You just need to call the hotline.

In a global sense, the future should look like this. Therefore, the use of blockchain in the accounting or registry of the city library does not solve the problems of the modern economy, as many people think, but it becomes the minimum requirement for a smooth transition to the Crypto State 2.0 platform.
